The Limitations of Human Vision at Night

I often hear comments from individuals who lack training in human factors and crash analysis and those in the field who claim, "They were there to be seen". However, this statement is inaccurate and is akin to saying that the average perception response time is 1.5 seconds.

I created this video during an early morning trip to court as part of an ADAS project focused on automatic headlights. You will see me flick to high beam, not because I observed something, but just happened to be at a good time as I was testing this section of fog.

The video highlights how limited our nighttime visibility is as humans, and we often outdrive our headlights. Despite significantly reducing my speed due to the fog, there was no time to perceive or react to the hazard.
